Beyond Grey to Blue Scarf by Rita Oates

A striking piece of wearable Irish art, created from an original painting by Irish artist Rita Oates and inspired by the possibilities that open when we move beyond a black-and-white way of seeing the world.

The Story Behind the Scarf

“Beyond the Black & White World…”

In this artwork, two solid blocks — one black, one white — represent a polarised world: fixed positions, opposing views and little room for understanding.

But when black and white begin to blend, something changes.

They become softer shades of grey.

We may still disagree, but we can listen. We can communicate. We can begin to understand another point of view.

Beyond the greys lies a world of colour — where red represents love, orange represents joy, and other colours carry the values of kindness, compassion, respect and truth.

The Beyond series grew from my belief that we can choose the kind of world we want to live in.

We can move beyond division and constraint towards a world filled with greater understanding, possibility and colour.

There is a whole world beyond black and white.

That idea inspired my original Beyond the Black & White World artwork — now transformed into this vibrant designer scarf.

A Very Special Honour

In November 2025, President of Ireland Catherine Connolly wore this scarf at the Ireland v South Africa rugby match at the Aviva Stadium in Dublin.

It was a very special honour to see one of my original artworks, transformed into wearable art, worn by our President on such a wonderful Irish occasion.
