'Going Home' Scarf by Rita Oates
A meaningful piece of wearable Irish art, created from an original painting by Irish artist Rita Oates and inspired by memories of Ireland, emigration and the powerful feeling of coming home.
The Story Behind the Scarf
“Going Home”
I was born in America, the child of Irish emigrants. When I was nine years old, the Hibernian Society chartered a direct flight to Ireland. For many on board, it was their first journey home in decades. My father was returning after 23 years.
As the plane descended over Ireland, people stretched to catch their first glimpse of the patchwork of green fields below.
I still remember the emotion on that plane.
This was a different time — when families separated by emigration were connected by letters and telegrams rather than phones. For those returning that day, the familiar Irish landscape seemed to reach up and welcome them home.
That childhood memory stayed with me and eventually became Going Home — a celebration of belonging, Irish heritage and the enduring connection to home, wherever in the world we may live.
A Very Special Honour
In 2026, President of Ireland Catherine Connolly wore my Going Home scarf at the St Patrick’s Day Parade.
To see this deeply personal design worn by our President on a day that celebrates Ireland and Irish people around the world was a very special honour.
