The Pantry Cafe & Walled Garden

You can order Coffee Beans & Brewing Equipment from The Pantry right HERE

The Pantry Cafe & Walled Garden is our award winning* cafe located just a cakes throw from Nook & Cranny on Main Street in Portlaoise. It's a perfect combination if you are out for a tasty bite and a tempting browse!

We lurve our coffee in The Pantry and are committed (okay maybe it's more of an obsession 😃) to only serving the best. Our specialty grade coffee beans come from 3Fe who roast fresh beans for us every week, while Noel and the guys at the local Village Dairy provide us with the freshest milk possible. Each and every coffee we serve is weighed, timed and measured to ensure it is consistently great every time.

All food is made in the cafe (including those impossible to resist cakes) by a crackin' team of foodies! Pop in a try a slice of our coffee & walnut cake or homemade doughnuts😋... (and then try to stop at one 😉)

Local ingredients are used wherever possible and in February 2020, we were honoured to be the very first business to receive a certificate from the "Laois TASTE" Provenance Scheme - an initiative which acknowledges businesses that are deeply committed to supporting local (Laois) based food producers and using their quality produce on our menus.

Our team is what really makes The Pantry a special place though. Their commitment 💪 to providing excellent service with a large dollop of personality creates the friendly neighbourhood atmosphere that The Pantry has become known for. They make sure every visitor to the cafe feels like they have just met a new friend, simply because it's the kind of warm and welcoming people they all are. It's an honour to come in and work with them each and every day...well, except for Sundays...they don't exactly like working Sundays, but that's okay...neither do we 🙃. Here's the crew at a fun team day away (the few guys missing from the piccie "talked" a great game, but then "shied" away from the challenge!🤣 )

Nestled at the back of The Pantry, you can get away from the hustle and bustle of our busy town center to the zen like calm of our hidden walled garden. It's our very own little oasis, right on Main Street.

So since 2014, we have been happily beavering away in our little business and are tremendously grateful for the local support and custom which has seen the Cafe triple in size, in that time. We've been lucky enough to receive a number of lovely reviews and awards over the years too (helps keep us on our toes 😉...) including this one from John and Sally McKennas' Guides in Spring 2020).

"There is a really funky sense of style about The Pantry, Portlaoise’s great success story. Ever since Ladonna and Mark got the doors open on Market Square, six years ago, they have simply powered ahead, getting better, gaining confidence, organically creating one of the significant Midlands don’t-miss! destinations. The fact that The Pantry was the very first address to receive the Laois Taste Supporter award shows their determination to build the foundation of The Pantry’s food offer from the ground up, and the trueness and honesty of their cooking and baking has gotten better every week. The cooking is tasty, meticulous and scrummy, offering just exactly what you felt like eating right through from breakfast time, and many food lovers will walk a country mile to enjoy the sweet baking, in particular. And somehow, amidst the countless cups of perfect 3fe coffee and the legions of lunches and snacks, they have found the time to open their walled garden terrace, and also to beget another treasure in Portlaoise, in the shape of the funky, stylish Nook & Cranny, an ace gift and craft shop. A Midlands jewel, for sure.

John and Sally McKennas' Guides - 2020

Honoured to receive the title of "Best Cafe in the Midlands" from Midlands 103 in both 2018 and 2019. Pauline & Mark here accepting the award on behalf of The Pantry team.

Below is a picture with just some of our fab local food producers:

(From left to right: Kevin Scully of The Merry Mill -  producers of the delicious organic & gluten free porridge; Noel Barcoe of The Village Dairy - try making a hot chocolate with their Jersey Milk, it's delightfully sinful; Helen Gee of G's Jams, a true treasure in Laois known countrywide for her outstanding preserves!; Mark of The Pantry - nuff about me!; Brian Brennan of DV8 Gold Cream Liqueur...a fantastic local cream liqueur that makes its way into many of our cakes here - Brian also produces the much loved Brennan's Old House Gin...though we haven't managed to fit that into a cake recipe...(yet!)

* The Pantry was named Best Cafe in the Midlands for 2018 and 2019 at the Midlands 103 Hospitality Awards.
