It was customary in Royal Courts of Europe to exchange ornate time pieces as Christmas gifts.
With this in mind Old Father Time carries the time piece to symbolise the nobility of exchanging gifts which later became widespread throughout the world. This piece also reminds us of the tradition of Boxing day which is the day after Christmas day. This was the day the boxes for the poor were opened which also led to the creation of the Piggy Bank. Originally the boxes were made of clay and were later shaped to that of a pig. This was symbolic of the time as the pig is of little use to man until its killed unlike a cow or sheep as was the situation with the piggy bank as it is of little use until it is broke open to reveal the money within.
